A Short California Break

After a 43-hour journey from Kathmandu I finally touch down in my homeland of California. I'll be spending the next 10 days here before heading back to Boston to start my corporate residency at GE Aviation.

My trip is incredibly relaxing, if not largely uneventful, and extremely necessary after a rather grueling month of travel overseas. I relish in the luxury of seeing my boyfriend every day, hanging out with friends I haven't seen in more than six months, visiting family, catching up on sleep and savoring food that won't send my stomach turning.  I do good ol' California things like host a barbeque, visit Santa Monica, stroll on the beach and take in a comfortable, non-111-degree summer climate.

But alas, this too-short break soon concludes and I'm back to Boston on June 9th before starting work that Monday. I'm glad to have allowed for a few days back in Beantown before beginning my internship because I have groceries to buy, cleaning to do and all of my paperwork for my first day to fill-out. Plus, I still have that pesky IFS India essay to write (it's due in a week!).

Besides all of that boring errand stuff, I also manage to meet up with several of my MBA classmates at Punters Pub for what will become a weekly Friday get-together. I'm impressed that nearly half of the class shows up! Looks like I won't be lonely during my co-op after all.

As I chat with my friends about their IFS trips (Russia and South America get particularly rave reviews) I also get the inside scoop on residencies from those who have started. While most have only spent a couple of weeks on the job, it seems like they're all getting some really good experience and some already have independent projects! All this talk of the corporate world is getting me anxious and excited for my first day of work. It's also good to hear that a couple of students who hadn't secured an internship before leaving for their IFS trips now are signed on with some great companies.

I spend the rest of the weekend relaxing and doing a little research on GE so that I can be ready to go the first day. I even send my boss an e-mail asking if there's anything I can read up on so that I can hit the ground running on Day 1. I want to make sure I make the best impression possible during my short six months there.

Well, wish me luck and keep checking for blog posts throughout my residency. Also, if any future Northeastern MBAs have questions about the program please feel free to comment. I'll be checking in regularly.
